Most Parents say, "the classroom curriculum is not rigorous enough."

bus.jpg

Most parents enroll their child into our after-school program because they feel that the in class curriculum is not "rigorous" enough.

Most parents who have children in elementary program usually say,

"I remember having homework every day, and my child gets homework once a week. I don't feel like this will prepare them for high school." This is a verbatim from a tutoring online application.

There has been an increase in our after school programs with elementary students as parents become more in tuned with the stresses of high school work.

We focus on independent learning skills in order to achieve better academic scores. These students are primarily in the Durham Region and online for those who cannot attend face to face sessions.

Luke's Tailored Tutoring (LTT) had a significant increase in enrollment since 2011. As of January 2019, over 200 students were enrolled in the math and language online programs alone.

After speaking with one of our students during our check in they said, "sometimes the pace of our class is very fast! I feel better knowing that I don’t have to get everything in class because my tutor always covers what I didn't understand." -  Mackenzie H, student of LTT in Whitby

During our assessment most parents will say "the teacher this year is much different than last year" or "My child doesn't get along with their teacher." We always remind parents that every child has a slightly different learning style which can be challenging to teachers when they have 20+ students at once. What's important is to work with students and their classroom teachers to help their overall growth.

Some students prefer teachers who get right to the point and some prefer teachers who explain material in detail which ultimately impacts the overall educational experience.

budget.jpeg

"It has been 2 weeks and my tutor has completed the review of the material that I didn't understand and now we will start with present date work and I feel much better." Michael T, student of LTT in Ajax

With only half of Ontario's Grade 6 students meeting the provincial standards for math from 2016-2017 academic year, it makes parents think what else that they can do to ensure their child gets the most out of an educational program.

With many worried parents contacting us, we can say that there is good news. The Ministry of Education has put forth an $8 million budget to the Ontario Focused Intervention Partnership initiative. This program will help grades kindergarten to grade 6 develop numeracy and literacy skills for before and after-school tutoring programs.

Even with this news, our private tutoring services have become more popular with our rates starting at $35/ hour. There are other popular tutoring locations that were searched with an average starting rate of $40/hr.

Not all private tutoring programs are best suited for students and it is key for parents to understand what programs to stay away from.

Parents should avoid programs that focus on speed and/or memorization, said Menelek Luke, an Academic Coordinator at Luke's Tailored Tutoring.

Tutoring is a gradual process where students are able to make mistakes and learn from them. Any program that is fast tracked is one that needs to be avoided.

Do Bad Teachers Exist?

albert.jpeg

Bad connections between students and teachers exist, but does that make the teacher bad?

Taking a look into social styles, there are 4 of them:

Driver:  A person who wants to get straight to the solution - personality example: Army Commander

Analytical:  A person who wants to be accurate and informative – Ask lots of questions - personality example:  News Reporter

Expressive:  A person who needs to have their emotions addressed and prefers activities that are energetic and engaging – personality example: TV Talk Show Host

Amiable:  A person who will not ask questions, needs the teacher to be supportive and helpful by following up with student

We introduce these terms because if a student is an analytical learner, but their teacher has an amiable social style, the students experience will not be the best and vice versa.

An example is a teacher who is a driver and wants to get straight to the solution and shows very minimal steps when arriving to their answers. Some students who are also a driver learn very well this way because it keeps them engaged. If a student is an expressive learner they may struggle in this class.

This is why some students will say they enjoy a teachers class, but another student of a different social style will say the exact opposite. For 1:1 sessions it is very easy to limit this challenge, however, when teachers have 25+ students in a class it makes it difficult to tailor to each individual.

Adapting is key, we always tell our students that college and university professors, even future managers will not change their ways. As much as a teacher may not change their social style, students must find ways to adapt to styles so that they are not left behind.

How to Get 5 Years of Work Experience Before Graduating

In order to graduate high school, every student is required to complete a minimum number of volunteering hours. While many view this as a burden, an obstacle on their path to higher education and a career; I would encourage you to view this, instead, as an opportunity. Volunteering is not about completing the bare minimum, it isn’t even about the valuable experience one can gain for their resume. It is about how the experience shapes you as an individual for your future. Your time is currency going forward, and must be spent wisely.

I do want to touch on the experience volunteering can provide though, as I feel it is an often overlooked opportunity. There are two main ways that volunteering can improve your resume for either work, or for academic success. Firstly, employers and institutions of higher education alike prefer to give positions of employment or scholarly pursuit to well-balanced individuals. This means the individual has demonstrated success or ability in more areas than just the mandated minimums. Extracurricular activities are, in this way, a massive opportunity for any student to make themselves a more appealing applicant. When you have demonstrated that you can manage your time well enough to achieve both academic success as well as engage as a citizen with you community, you increase your ubiquitous appeal as an applicant.

Secondly, you will eventually look to finding a career. Regardless of how well educated you are, and how high your GPA may have been, a transition to the professional world, for the most part, requires experience. The vast majority of employers, with few exceptions, are looking to hire individuals experienced, not just in studying and achieving high grades, but in the real world. Try finding a career that does not have a minimum of required experience, and you will understand. But here is the catch-22, you need experience to gain employment and you cannot gain work experience without a job; or can you? Volunteering is an often unexploited chance to gain professional experience. Seek out opportunities to volunteer in the field you wish to one day work. If you want to work in healthcare, volunteer at a hospital or medical office; if you want to work in education, volunteer working with students; the opportunities are endless. Additionally, any post-secondary institution you may attend will have clubs, special interest groups, committees, and volunteer organizations, get involved. You can gain years of experience, which gives you a leg up on your competition, simply by volunteering your time. Simply put, volunteering is a way for you to get your foot in the door, by gaining irreplaceable workplace experience.

Volunteering can also allow you to experience if your desired career path is right for you, or find a passion you did not know existed. In this sense, volunteering is a chance to expose yourself to new options for your future, and analyze existing options. If you want to work in healthcare, or education, or business you will never know the experience will be like, or if it is the right path for you. If you have no clue where your passions are, go out and volunteer your time to finding out.

It may seem trivial to some, but volunteering also opens social doors as well. You will likely need personal references if you hope to apply to graduate or professional schools. When you volunteer in an organization, you will grow your social circle, you can meet like-minded individuals, professionals already working in a field which interests you. Any of these people can be references, or simply, a new friend.

Whether volunteering provides career experience; beefs up your resume; gives valuable insight into what you want to do, who you are, reveals hidden passions; grows your social circle; or simply rewards you with the knowledge you are a citizen within a community, and you are a better person for having given back to that community; volunteering is never time wasted.

Everyone Meet Isaac Malloo

We first met Isaac on May 23, 2015 which was the day of his academic assessment.  Issac’s parents reached out to us to supplement his education because he was having difficulty achieving his academic goals. After his academic assessment, we asked Isaac to give us the same amount of effort that we gave him and he did just that.

We devised a 3 month plan for Isaac’s educational success and he began to implement promptly. He immediately became effective to the point where we had to compile the 3 month plan into a 2 month plan. Isaac’s diligence paired with his patience were key factors during his progression. He took ownership of his grades and experienced a great deal of success!

At Luke’s Tailored Tutoring, we believe in embracing an atmosphere of positive support. In saying this, we are pleased to present our current and past academic specialists that have helped Isaac to reach his goal.

Kirsten’s Luke’s Tailored Tutoring Scholarship

We are proud to announce that Kirsten was selected for our $100 scholarship out of 72 applicants. Our scholarship was based on a leadership question from a real life business example. The scenario was:

"A hedge fund company QRS has 30 workers and they have been in business for 15 years. 10 of the workers are excellent at their job, 10 of the workers are average, and the last 10 are holding the company back. They are second best to their rival company WXY who has been in business for 10 years. How would you make changes to the QRS company to make them number 1?"

Kirsten was able to articulate leadership skills and decision making skills which we believe will help to progress her to new heights as she starts her post-secondary schooling in September.

As this was our first case study scholarship, and we are ecstatic about the number of applicants and the various amount of responses. Thank you to everyone who participated and we will look forward to offering more scholarships in the near future.

Congratulations to Kelly Nelson - A former Academic Specialist with LTT

We are happy to announce that our Academic Math and Chemistry Specialist Kelly Nelson has accepted a full time Teaching position with the Grande Prairie Catholic District School Board!

We couldn't be happier for Kelly as she starts her journey as a teacher. We have had the opportunity to work closely with Kelly during her time with LTT.

She has contributed to 3 of our 13 student's accepting their offers to Post-Secondary in 2015. She connects very well with the students and helped which helps has with several of our partnerships.

On a personal note, we thoroughly enjoyed having Kelly on our team. Her demeanor made many days easier for LTT and especially our students! We will look back on Kelly's time in our programs with much admiration and gratitude as she was always willing to jump into any situation.

Kelly is a dedicated teacher who truly cares about her craft and students. She presents herself well and any school looking to add an exceptional teacher to their school would do well to take a closer look at Kelly Nelson.

Signatures Without Cursive

Since the removal of cursive writing from school curriculum's across Ontario, there has been a trend about signatures. Many student's print their name as opposed to "signing" them.

The purpose of a signature is to identify yourself on a document without the ability for someone else to mimic it. Printing your name makes it much easier to mimic your identity.

One way to solve this is issue is as finger print scanning system for E-Documents. As far-fetched as this seems, it fairly close to reality as companies will soon invest into this to protect their clients from fraud.

Now this scanning system won't be cheap so until we find a better solution we will continue to teach cursive to our student's.

Educating our Newcomers

We launched our Academic Displaced Persons Program in February 2016. Since then we have helped 6 Syrian refugees, at least twice per week.

This program was free of charge and completed from the comfort of their home. We predominately covered English and Math based on the Ontario Curriculum, and we had a lot of fun doing it.

For Math, we taught our newcomers the basic principles which included addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

As for English we worked on storytelling and expressed our newcomers to write and speak about the experiences in Canada thus far. We are compelled to say that they think highly of our nation.

"As this was our first time taking on this kind of effort, we excited and overwhelmed with the amount of volunteers who applied to work with us
- Menelek Luke Founder of Luke's Tailored Tutoring.

We had 50 volunteers that applied within a 2 week window which was much more than expected. We helped a total of 6 Syrian newcomers with structured schedules which then lead to tutoring on an on need basis.

We are currently in the process of acquiring permission to post pictures and specific stories from our newcomers and their private sponsors who helped to arrange the sessions.

Acquire Help Before You Need Help

Feeling out a class is a tricky process especially in the upper years of high school. We always recommend learning about a class before starting a class.

Here's how we do it.

During the summer we jump start students on Math and Science classes before they enroll in them in September. This way they have an understanding of what they need help with before they start.

We have been completing this summer program for the last 2 years and the students have responded well to our program with 16 of 18 grade 12 students already receiving their post-secondary conditional offers.

We have the full math and science prep course for the summer 2-3 times per week.

Contact us today for full details.
